The Judaic Heritage Program for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired, established in 2000, was the first to bring Judaism to Israel’s Deaf community. It has evolved to focus on youth programming and bridging the Deaf and Hearing worlds through Jewish traditions. This semester-long program begins with in-depth Jewish education and culminates in a full-day event where Deaf young adults from across Israel celebrate their Bar/Bat Mitzvah with peers, family, and school counselors. Participants come from every city, from Eilat in the South to northern border communities. The program expands yearly, with the Deaf students receiving Torah and Jewish values education in their respective cities. The celebration includes a ceremony, festive meal, and a tour of Jerusalem’s Old City, gathering nearly 200 guests. This program not only provides an enriching Jewish experience but also fosters friendships and connections among Deaf students from across the country.
